Digital Markets Act: Civil Society letter to the European Parliament (IMCO)

On 28 June 2021, Privacy International alongside 15 other civil society organisations published an open letter to all Members of the European Parliament Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection raising concerns about the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) proposal. Privacy International believes that the proposal needs further strenghtening as we noted also in our analysis of the DMA.

Key advocacy points

We believe that the European Parliament should:

  • Add an interoperability obligation for core platform services;
  • Ensure the DMA has effective enforcement provisions;
  • Strengthen anti-circumvention measures and make the prohibition to use dark patterns explicit;
  • Strengthen the end user’s position.

PI responded to the ICO consultation on engineering individual rights into generative AI models such as LLMs. Our overall assessment is that the major generative AI models are unable to uphold individuals’ rights under the UK GDPR. New technologies designed in a way that cannot uphold people’s rights cannot be permitted just for the sake of innovation.
