US police charge protesters with domestic terrorism
The ACLU, NAACP, and other civil rights and civil liberties organisations have called on the US Department of Homeland Security to investigate intelligence gathering at "Cop City", a plan to build a police and fire department training centre in a forest near Atlanta, Georgia. More than 40 environmental protesters defending the forest have been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism, and one was shot by police during a raid on the forest in January 2023. The organisations have warned in a letter that equating lawful protest with a national security threat is a "false narrative" and are asking the DHS to cease all suspicionless social media activity monitoring.
