New Report Demands Digital Independence for Palestine
Campaigners are today calling for urgent action to allow Palestinians to develop an independent telecommunications infrastructure following the release of a report detailing how the Israeli government exerts its existing control to rule and monitor the online lives of Palestinian people.
‘Connection Interrupted’, produced by Privacy International partner organisation 7amleh, describes how the Israeli government restricts key telecommunications infrastructure in Palestine, including access to frequencies and key network equipment.
As well as undermining a key section of the Palestinian economy, this facilitates violations of the Palestinians’ right to privacy and freedom of expression, amounting to what is called a “digital occupation” of the Palestinian digital space.
7amleh is urging industry, regulatory, and government bodies to take specific steps to ensure Palestinians have full access to an independent telecommunications infrastructure and with it their rights.
