People must be protected everywhere, under a universal rights framework.
PI has led the push for privacy to be recognised globally.
Until recent the international human right to privacy was largely unaddressed. We led initiatives to establish law on the right to privacy through UN special procedures and human rights processes, and on UN General Assembly resolutions on privacy. As a result of our work UN processes and agencies are developing privacy guidelines; over 12 governments have been held to account by UN human rights processes; UN resolutions held strong modern language on safeguards. We continue to engage globally advocating for greater attention and better regulation in the area.
